Popsicle stick lamp

This is another summer vacation craft. I saw this lamp in a stationary shop as a kit so I simply drew up the plans to make my own. It really is so simple to glue popsicle sticks together and slowly build a beautiful lamp like this. I also made the electrical cable with switch. You will find the original kit here

Crochet dolls

These lovely little crochet dolls are made with lots of love, care and time. My wife makes them for friends so they disappear as soon as they are made. Each doll has a special character depending on the colours and facial expression. Everyone who has received a doll is overwhelmed by it’s cuteness and quality.

This was Lee’s first homemade project. He wanted a small speaker for his iPod touch, it was impossible to find some parts for the ATS including the Altoids tin so he made his own tin speaker. We named it after the tin, Super Minty. It sounded good but after making an ATS many months later he never used it again. The amplifier is based on the LM-386.

Lee on TV

Many people have asked us about our son being on TV, so here are a couple of pics from behind the scenes. The advert was shot on my birthday and took 12 hours of Lee playing the violin, playing computer games and lots of sitting around watching the crew. We had a fantastic time and a wonderful experience in the studio. Watch the ad here.

Menger sponge

My son made this level 1 sponge on a Friday morning because we had a long weekend. We had already made cubes from business cards and found the Menger sponge on another website. After putting this level 1 sponge together my son had enough enthusiasm to make a level 3 sponge, but he didn’t have 9 years of time and 66,048 business cards. Take a look at a level 3 sponge here.

I found this kit in a torn plastic bag behind lots of coloured felt. It was so cheap I had to buy it. I made this at the same time my son was making his night light house. (first post on this blog) The instructions were pretty vague and in Chinese, so I simply made it from experience. I changed a few things such as the back and the sides. The CD stand now rests next to our music system on our balcony, which is our workshop. Here is a link to buy the kit in Taiwan. Popsicle stick CD stand

This was a winter vacation project. We had to order some parts from America because we couldn’t find them here in Taiwan. We redrew the PCB and etched it ourselves, then my son soldered all the parts on. I prepared the tin and my son put it all together, we were so excited to switch it on and when we did it sounded great. You can find the ATS instructable here.

Paper models

As you can see I love making paper models. This collection was for my kindergarten students as a thank you because they were really good for putting up with me for two years. I made them during their nap time for about 6 months. I chose not to use air conditioning (we need to save the earth) so I had to be careful not to drip sweat all over the paper. We live in Taiwan so the temperature was around 32 degrees Celsius. By the way I had 14 boys and 1 girl.

Cutie dog

Here is another lovely piece of crochet made by my son. He is 12 years old and really enjoys being creative with his hands. We have lots of crochet books from Japan, we can’t read them but my son knows how to read the crochet patterns, and so he wanted to make this one. It really does look cute.
